Bad breath or halitosis is not an uncommon condition. Regrettably, most people who offend in this respect are totally unaware of their problem.

Halitosis or Bad breath symptoms

Bad breath

The most obvious symptoms of bad breath are when you smell your own breath! Put a handkerchief
on your palm and smell. If the smell is odorous, you have bad breath problem.

Halitosis or bad breath causes

Diseased gums, dental decompose

The most ordinary cause of bad breath (halitosis) is unhealthy gums. Dental decay at the roots of the teeth may result in sore in the gums with foul-smelling pus, giving an unpleasant odor to the breath. Even small holes in the teeth may give a place where germs can grow and release foul odors.

Conditions of nose, throat and Respiratory area

Other causes of bad breath are conditions of the nose, throat, respiratory area, or stomach which are connected with chronic infection or local upsets of one type or another, such as chronic tonsillitis, lung diseases like chronic bronchitis, chronic gastritis, and sinusitis which causes a release at the back of the throat. Many cases of bad breath, however, are caused by gastro-intestinal disorders, intestinal sluggishness and mainly by chronic constipation.

Home remedies for bad breath (Halitosis)

1. Halitosis treatment with Fenugreek

Amongst the many home remedies for halitosis, the use of fenugreek has proved most useful. A tea made from the seeds of this vegetable must be taken frequently for correcting the situation. This tea is made by putting one teaspoon of seeds in half a litre of cold water and permits it to simmer for fifteen minutes over a low flame. It must then be strained and used as tea.

2. Halitosis treatment with help of Avocado

Another effectual remedy for bad breath is avocado, which is far better to any mouth lotion or remedies for this state. It efficiently removes intestinal putrefaction or decay which is one of the most important causes of bad breath.

3. Halitosis treatment with Guava

Fresh guava is helpful in halitosis. It is source of tannic, malic, oxalic, and phosphoric acids as well as calcium, oxalate, and manganese. Chewing it is an outstanding tonic for the teeth and gums. It helps cure bleeding from gums and discontinues bad breath. Munching or chewing tender leaves of guava tree also stops bleeding from gums and bad breath.

4. Halitosis treatment with Parsley

Parsley is a precious Cure for bad breath. Two cups of water must be boiled and several twigs of parsley, coarsely cut, should be steeped in this water along with two or three whole cloves or a quarter teaspoon of ground cloves. This infusion should be stirred occasionally while cooling. It must then be strained and it can be used as a mouthwash or gargle many times in a day.

5.Halitosis treatment with Raw Juices

All fruit and vegetable juices are helpful in the treatment of halitosis or bad bretah and should be taken generously by those suffering from this disorder. Juices from green vegetables are particularly valuable.

Bad breath or halitosis is an internal disorder which can be diagnosed by a proper examination.Halitosis is also the term used to describe mouth and throat odor due to vomiting. Odors include the smell of rotting eggs, an ammonia smell as in severe kidney failure or the sweet fruity smell in diabetic ketoacidosis. Odor-causing bacteria thrive on these secretions, cause protein breakdown and produce volatile sulfur compounds which account for the bad breath. Bad breath can be very embarrassing and can cause social, emotional and psychological anxiety in a person.

Bad breath can also be caused by tobacco use, diet and chronic dry mouth. In eighty to ninety percent of cases, bad breath originates in the mouth due to inadequate plaque control, periodontal disease, dry mouth, faulty restorations, and in particular due to excessive bacterial growth on the posterior third of the dorsal surface of the tongue. Halitosis is not infectious.
Bacteria that create gingivitis live in your plaque and cause your gums to inflame, bleed, and separate from your teeth. Gingivitis can also be a cause bad breath. Bacteria, as usual, consume foods and excrete wastes in the form of sulfur compounds which cause bad breaths. Bacteria colonizing the tongue and pockets within the gums are associated with volatile sulfur compounds in periodontal health and disease.

There has to be a systematic approach in investigating the likely causes of bad breath. You start by examining the oral cavity. If the mouth is healthy, other problems like chronic sinusitis, post-nasal drip, tonsillitis and chronic lung conditions must be excluded. If halitosis still prevails, then the most probable cause is a digestive disturbance, usually due to improper diet leading to poor elimination and constipation. Overeating can result in digestive enzyme insufficiency thus causing large portions of partially digested foods to enter the small intestine, thus setting up fermentation causing both flatulence and halitosis.

Other culprits causing halitosis include individual foods, stress and anxiety, and certain heavy metal poisoning. Products for bad breath include mouthwashes, sprays, mints and parsley oil capsules but these products are of negligible benefit.

Treatment of bad breath includes steps in eliminating the above causes. Other requirements include:

1.Avoiding an improper food combination e.g. citrus and complex carbohydrate, mixing fruits and vegetables or melons with just about everything else.

2.Ensuring fiber sufficiency and eliminating excessive consumption of sugar, refined carbohydrates, milk, and meat as these foods are mucus forming and favors oral diseases, digestive weakness, and constipation.

3.Brushing your teeth, flossing and seeing your dentist regularly may reduce bad breath. Brushing the tongue is also recommended since it traps large amounts of bacteria. Brush your tongue daily, not just in the front, but in the back. Use a tongue brush or scraper. Brushing should include gingival, tongue, and palatal surfaces because vigorous tongue brushing twice daily has been demonstrated in several studies to reduce the severity of malodorous morning breath. Brushing every day can eliminate much of bad breath.

4.Bad breath can also be checked by drinking 6 – 8 glasses of water daily. This habit will keep increase saliva production and an occasional swish of the mouth with water can loosen food particles. However, do not drink with meals to avoid enzyme dilution.

5.a) A multi vitamins and minerals tablet. It can assist in regulating the bowel movement as well as supplying the ingredients for the digestive enzymes production.

b) Zinc tablet 20-50mg 3 times daily

c) Liquid chlorophyll as much as possible

d) Lactobacillus 2 capsules 3 times daily to normalize the bowel

e) Digestive enzymes to be taken with meals

f) Laxative for constipation

g) Charcoal tablet to absorb toxins.

Let’s face it, sometimes a dog’s breath is no laughing matter and in the event that your dog is having a pungent odor coming from his mouth, as a caring pet owner, you can tend to be worried. The fact of the matter is that if your dog’s breath is unnaturally smelly, this could be the sign of other potential issues which need to be rectified. The number one cause of this dog breath is a condition which is known as periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is a condition which affects your dog’s gums and teeth. It is a deterioration of your pets gums, teeth and jaw bones by tiny microscopic bacteria that actually causes this bad breath. Most people are under the false impression that you could simply give the dog mints and poof; the odor is gone. While this may help somewhat it is not curing the actual cause.

Your dog is a carnivore. Not like us, he does not eat vegetables or breads or anything other then bloody red meat. If you are a vegetarian, then a dog is most definitely your arch nemesis. It is when they are not getting the proper nutrition because of soft, chewy and rice composed foods that his teeth can get infected and start degrading. Your dog needs his teeth and the best way to fight this condition in dogs is by letting him use them.

Nylabone is perhaps one of the most well-known and favored dog toys and bad breath dog products that help, but did you know that most of the Nylabone dog chew toys are also designed to prevent periodontal disease? Take specifically the Nylabone Plaque Attacker Dental Ball, this product is designed to let your dog use his teeth and help him develop and maintain healthy gums, jaw muscles and much more. However one of the biggest advantages of it though is that it has been treated with a medicine which can help your dog to get rid of the disease.

This is important because the bacteria that cause periodontal disease can also get into your dog’s blood stream and start to infect your dog’s vital organs. Your dog’s kidneys and liver are especially susceptible to these bacteria and the outcome is definitely something you do not want.

The periodontal disease starts easily enough with gingivitis, products similar to the Dingo Dental Dog treats are specifically designed to help your dog fight off this gingivitis. If you make sure that your dog is getting the proper nutrition as well as oral exercise, then you can ensure that this bad breath is a thing of the past.

This of course does not mean to stop giving your dog treats and worrying if the treats will make the condition worse. Dog’s immune systems are extremely resilient and all that it takes from you is a little helping hand. Change his dog treats to something that is specially formulated for treating the dental conditions. When you purchase toys for your dog, look for chew toys that will let him exercise his jaw and also help to keep his mouth free of bacteria.

Dealing with doggie breath is no laughing matter. While in the gingivitis stage it can be cured. However once it reaches the disease stage it can only be halted; never cured. When your dog’s breath starts to stink, make sure you do what you have to in order to halt the condition, the more that it is allowed to continue, the faster it will attack until your dog is left toothless and in pain.

With this said, it also means that long before your dog even develops the doggie breath, you need to make sure that he is getting the proper dental care he needs to stop and prevent gingivitis which in turn will stop the periodontal disease from occurring in the first place.

Taking care of false teeth using a do-it-yourself approach and homemade cleaning solutions can be quite effective. If you’re interested, here’s how it can be done.

1) You need to brush your denture first.

The exact same type of debris (bacteria, dental plaque, staining and tartar) that accumulates on natural teeth and oral tissues will accumulate on false teeth too. Effective denture cleaning always starts with a thorough brushing, both inside and out, in the presence of water. (This is true whether you plan to use a homemade or commercial cleaning product as your next step.)

Most any type of brush that you feel might be suitable will probably be fine. As a guide, you might look at the denture brushes that are sold in the dental health section of your local store. Denture brushes have a bristle stiffness and shape that has been specially designed for used with dentures. Usually these brushes are relatively inexpensive and make a good choice. But if you already have a brush that is similar in nature and you think that it can navigate over the contours of your denture and give it a good scrubbing then that’s fine. Many people use a toothbrush, nailbrush or other small brush when cleaning their false teeth.

You don’t have to apply any special cleaner when you brush your denture. If you want to use a denture cleansing powder or paste that’s fine. A mild dishwashing soap is perfectly suitable too. Don’t feel that you have to use anything. It is the action of the brush scrubbing against the denture that produces the results. The type of cleaner used, if any, is secondary.

It is important that neither the stiffness of the chosen brush or the abrasiveness of the cleaner chosen will scratch or abrade your denture. This is especially true when the long term is considered. For this reason, toothpaste (which typically does contain abrasives) is usually not a good choice for denture cleaning. Additionally, your denture brush should be dedicated to that use only. A shared-function brush may retain residual amounts of other cleaners (such as toothpaste) on it and scratch up the surface of your denture.

2) Chemical denture cleaning and disinfecting is needed after brushing.

Denture brushing alone will not be effective in keeping your dentures fresh and your mouth health. This is because at a microscopic level the surface of a denture is very porous. This means that there are an abundant number of locations in which microorganisms can find safe harbor, even after the most diligent brushing efforts. Because of this some sort of chemical cleansing and disinfecting is required for effective denture cleaning.

Homemade denture cleaning solutions.

Very suitable homemade denture cleaners can be made from common household products. Two of them are bleach and also vinegar. The following explains how to prepare and use them.

A) Bleach-based denture cleaning solution.

A dilution of household bleach (sodium hypochlorite, Chlorox) can be used to clean false teeth. It is typically used as a mixture of one part bleach to ten parts tap water. Dentures are usually soaked in this solution for about twenty to thirty minutes.

Diluted beach cleaning solution has been shown to effectively kill those microorganisms that remain harbored on false teeth even after a thorough scrubbing has been performed. And as you might expect, it will also remove some types of denture staining.

A bleach-based cleaner on its own will not be effective in removing tartar accumulation. This deficiency can be remedied by adding one teaspoon of Calgon water softener (Calgon the calcium-chelating agent, not Calgon the soap or bath oil) per glassful of one to ten bleach to tap water solution.

Precautions to consider when using a bleach-based denture cleaning solution.

While bleach solution is the most commonly used type of homemade denture cleaner, if you do choose to use it there are a few considerations you should keep in mind.

a) After soaking, you must thoroughly rinse your denture off with water. Any residual cleaner that does remain might cause gum irritation.

b) Long-term, regular use of a bleach-based denture soak may lighten the color of a denture’s tissue-colored plastic. For most people this will either be a non-issue or else a change that is not readily apparent. But a change, especially when the long term is considered, is possible.

c) Bleach-based denture cleaners may tarnish the metal component of partial dentures. This is especially likely when the soak duration is greater than ten minutes per day.

d) Unless your dentist states otherwise, bleach-based denture cleaners typically are not considered to be appropriate for use with dentures that have a soft plastic liner.

B) Vinegar-based denture cleaners.

Vinegar (acetic acid solution) can be used as a denture cleaner. The usual recommendation is a soak created by mixing vinegar with an equal amount of water. This solution has been reported to be effective at killing the types of microorganisms that reside on the surface of dentures, however, less so than the bleach-based solution described above.

Vinegar-based denture cleaner is an effective way to remove tartar that has accumulated on false teeth. The acidic nature of the vinegar will soften and digest the tartar. A soaking may remove all or just some of it. That which remains may have become soft enough to brush off. If not, repeated soakings over time can be expected to do the trick.

Precautions to consider when using a vinegar-based denture cleaning solution.

Just as with bleach-based denture cleansers, there are precautions to take when using a vinegar-based one.

a) Vinegar-based denture cleaning solutions may tarnish the metal component of partial dentures.

b) Unless your dentist states otherwise, vinegar-based denture cleaners are not usually considered to be appropriate for use with false teeth that have a soft plastic liner.

Why use just one kind of denture cleaner?

It’s not a bad idea to consider the use of more than one type of denture soaking solution. Bleach-based cleaner tends to excel in denture sterilization. Vinegar-based solution will be better at removing tartar and may (due to its acidity) be effective against some microorganisms than bleach. While you may not choose to use both types of soaks on the same day, you should consider switching off between the two on a daily (preferably) or weekly basis.
